Tickets can be bought at the onsite ticket office or via the website. In practice, the online purchase process is quite cumbersome, though on-site ticket buying is hassle-free as there usually are no lines.

How to get to Nesvizh Castle

The castle lies approximately 112 km from the Minsk Ring Road toward Brest—88 km of that is along the M1 highway, then a right turn (same direction you’d take to Mir Castle), followed by another right turn toward Nesvizh, located on the opposite side from Mir.

Best way to visit: by car—this allows you to visit both castles (they’re just 30 km apart) in one day. If you don’t have a vehicle, renting one is recommended, as public transport won’t let you comfortably visit both in a single day.

Options:

1. Private transfer from Minsk – includes a knowledgeable certified guide, pick-up/drop-off from your accommodation (car or minivan, depending on group size), and a flexible personalized itinerary (shop or lunch stops included). Only caveat: entrance fees and meals aren’t included.

2. Bus – 4–9 departures a day from Minsk Central Bus Station, ~2.5 hours ride, one-way ticket from 10 BYN → approx. $3.03 / €2.60. In summer, tickets sell out fast—advance planning is needed.

3. Minibus – about six departures daily from Minsk’s Central and Eastern bus stations, ticket from 11 BYN → $3.33 / €2.86. Schedule varies, so check ahead.

Travel Tip:

There is no railway station in Nesvizh. The fastest option is by car—about one hour’s drive. If that’s not for you, the minibus  (like the one in the photo above) is your next best choice.

Nesvizh Castle: a brief history for tourists

In the 16th century, one of the most famous and richest families, the Radziwills, owned the Nesvizh and Mir lands. Nesvizh Castle, made of stone with a defensive function, was founded at the end of the 16th century by Prince Mikołaj Krzysztof Radziwiłł, nicknamed «The Orphan».

A little later, the construction of the palace began in the castle.

Nesvizh Castle is unique in that it housed Europe’s largest private library and art gallery. Almost 20 thousand books, 1000 rare paintings, weapons, coins were kept in the collection of the Radziwills.

For almost five centuries, the castle was besieged by the enemy many times and almost destroyed, but each time it was restored. In Soviet times, the castle began to belong to the state, which took it under protection.

From 2001 to 2012, the last modern reconstruction was carried out in the castle and palace.

Museum in Nesvizh Castle

Today the palace and park complex Nesvizh Castle consists of:

• Palace surrounded by stone walls and towers. There is the main museum area. I’ll tell you a little more below.
• Parks:
  • Castle Park (Anthony Park). Named after one of the family members of the owners of the castle — Anthony Radziwill. It begins with an access dam, on which there was once a bridge, when the castle had a defensive function. The park borders the walls of the castle from the outside, you can walk through the park around the castle.
  • Old park (Ozerin). One of the oldest parks near Nesvizh Castle. It was founded at the end of the 19th century. In the 90s of the 20th century, the Alley of Memory was opened here, on which bronze busts of famous cultural figures of Belarus and the Belarusian land are located.
  • New park (Marysin). It was named after Princess Mary and her tragic fate.
  • English Park (Hippodrome). Stables were located here, races and equestrian performances were held.
  • Japanese park (Plintovka).

Sights of Nesvizh

If you have time left, what else can you see in Nesvizh? There are several attractions in the city. All are worth your attention, a walk around the city will not take much time (no more than an hour and a half), because they are all located right in the center of the city, which is tiny here.

• The population of Nesvizh is only 15,000 people. This is a very small county town.

Corpus Christi Church

It is located next to the Nesvizh Castle. All guides include a tour of the church in their program. Here are some facts about the church:

• Coordinates: 53.22061, 26.68361.
• Built in the 16th century.
• The first church service was held in 1593.
• This is the first building in the Baroque style on the territory of the Commonwealth of Poland.
• Historical interior: painting «The Last Supper» by K.D. Gedsky (1752) above the altar, a luxurious organ, stucco and sculptures of the 17th-19th centuries.
• Under the temple there is a crypt — the family tomb of the Radziwills (more than 70 sarcophagi). Getting inside the crypt is very difficult.
• The entrance is free. Opening hours from 9 to 19. But it is advisable for tourists to visit the church from 10 to 16.
• Inside: no photo, no noise (turn off the sound on the phone), appropriate clothing.

Castle Tower

Located opposite the dam (travel to the castle) and Corpus Christi Church.

It was built almost at the same time as the castle at the end of the 16th century. It was part of the defensive system of the castle and the city of Nesvizh.

Today, the tower is used as the bell tower of Corpus Christi Church, so you can’t get inside.

City hall

At the end of the 16th century, the city of Nesvizh received the right to self-government (Magdeburg Law), and one of the requirements was the construction of a stone city hall. For 10 years, a two-story building with a tower and shopping malls was built. On the first floors there were trading shops, a warehouse of weapons. On the second — the courtroom, meeting rooms of the city government and the city archive.

Today the town hall has been restored. On the second floor there is a museum dedicated to the city self-government of Nesvizh in the 18th century.

• Opening hours: from 9:00 to 18:00 (the ticket office is open from 09:30 to 17:30)

• Is it worth going inside: only if you are interested in the history of Nesvizh as a city.

Good to know:

According to a similar project, the town hall was built in the city of Mogilev. But that town hall is higher, and you can climb the town hall tower and look at the whole Mogilev from a height. Slutsk gates (Slutsk brama)

Brama is the gate. This attraction is one of the five gates to the city that have existed since the 16th century. Inside the gate there was a warehouse and a guard room, which took a fee for transporting goods to the city.

The gate was rebuilt in the Baroque style. And today the Slutsk gate has taken on the appearance in which it was in the middle of the 18th century.

• Opening hours: only during the summer period (from May 18 to September 30) from 9:30 to 18:30.

• Is it worth it to go inside: probably not. Nothing interesting inside. The Slutsk gate is interesting only for its exterior.

Craftsman’s House

The Craftsman’s House (or Market House) was built in the first half of the 18th century on the market square. And today the appearance of the house has not changed much. This is what many buildings in the center of Nesvizh looked like in the 18th century.

Only a very wealthy citizen, most likely a merchant, could afford to build such a large stone house. On the ground floor there were workshops and shops. On the second — living rooms. Now there is a children’s library.

Benedictine monastery

The monastery and the church on its territory were built almost at the same time as the Nesvizh castle and palace at the end of the 16th century. And at that time they were also part of the defensive system of the city. The daughters of wealthy citizens of Nesvizh studied at the monastery. A music school and a library were also opened there.

The monastery was finally closed in 1939, and during the war the church burned down. Today, the building of the monastery houses a pedagogical college.

The building can be viewed from the outside. A part of it is a well-preserved gate-bell tower.

Of course, most of the guests of Nesvizh come here on a one-day tour from Minsk. But if you have enough time, and the night caught you on the way, we can offer several interesting options for spending the night in Nesvizh.

Tips and tricks for tourists

Perhaps the most important tip: a guided tour will save you time and money. And the amount of interesting information that you will receive during the tour is not comparable to what you will read on Wikipedia before the trip on your own.

As a rule, most tourists start their journey through the castles of Belarus from the Mir Castle. Then they move to Nesvizh (it is only 30 km from the Mir Castle). And after the second excursion and a walk around the city, you will surely get hungry.

Tip number two: have lunch in one of the cozy Nesvizh restaurants. We recommend the Hetman restaurant on the territory of the castle or the Skarbnitsa restaurant next to the town hall. They serve dishes of Belarusian cuisine.
